The iia presents at IAEA International Conference on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources

Today the iia presented to international regulators and nuclear security experts at the IAEA ‘International Conference on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources – Accomplishments and Future Endeavours’.

The presentation titled ’Industry Collaboration to Enhance Security at Industrial Irradiators’ highlighted the importance and benefits of engaging with industry when developing new arrangements to enhance irradiator security.  Collaboration helps to ensure that any new systems are technically acceptable, processes are appropriate, and that unique industry considerations are addressed.

The presentation focused of the contributions of industry, via the iia Gamma Working Group, to security projects that it undertook with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS).  Further details of these projects can be found in this summary.

Following the success of these projects, the iia Gamma Working Group has initiated a project on cybersecurity at industrial irradiators.  One other security project and a safety project are also under consideration.  Additionally, the iia and WINS will jointly host a Workshop on the Security of Gamma Irradiation Facilities on 11th November 2022 at the IMRP20 meeting in Thailand.

Working through the iia has enabled stakeholders with an interest in enhancing security to learn from focused industry experts and share new security arrangements to a wide international audience from industry.

The iia thanks the highly engaged industry members of the Gamma Working Group, Michal Kuca and his team at SNL, and Pierre Legoux and his colleagues at WINS.  Collaboration between these stakeholders has been highly effective.
