Phytosanitary Irradiation in Latin America
The IAEA initiated a technical cooperation project for Latin America and the Caribbean (RLA1021) in 2022. The main objective of this project is to strengthen the competitiveness of regional agro-industrial economies. It is believed that irradiation technologies for phytosanitary purposes, can be used to minimize environmental impacts and improve the quality of life for people.
A recent meeting of the CRP was held in Buenos Aires. This event brought together representatives of different LATAM countries including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay in conjunction with some of its regulatory bodies in the field of health and safety.
An objective of the event was to provide support in the developing feasibility studies for the implementation of irradiation facilities for phytosanitary purposes.
