‘Unlocking the Potential of Phytosanitary Irradiation’ PsIP workshop overview
The Phytosanitary Irradiation Platform (PsIP) held the ‘Unlocking the Potential of Phytosanitary Irradiation’ workshop in Costa Rica ahead of IMRP 2024. This brought together 35 participants from 13 countries to consider actions to advance the phytosanitary irradiation (PI) industry. Combining expert presentations and interactive discussions, the event addressed the dual drivers of PI—trade and biosecurity—and its role in enhancing international commerce, sustainability, and pest control.
Participants explored challenges such as regulatory compliance, facility design, and consumer acceptance, guided by a framework built on three pillars: Facilities, Standards, and Protocols. This structured approach facilitated discussions on improving infrastructure, harmonizing regulations, and streamlining trade.
Key outcomes included a call for greater collaboration, stakeholder mapping, expanded regional events, and documented best practices. The workshop emphasised aligning efforts across organizations like the IAEA/FAO, IFIS, and PsIP, setting a course for unlocking the full potential of PI in global trade and biosecurity.
