Sterigenics Webinar – ‘Gamma: Sustainable Sterilization for the Long Term’
Sterigenics, member of iia, are hosting a webinar ‘Gamma: Sustainable Sterilization for the Long Term’ on 18 September 2024. The webinar will supply details of both the global supply chain for Cobalt-60 and the sustainability of gamma irradiation as a sterilisation modality. Registration and the abstract for this event can be found below:
“Gamma sterilization has been the predominant radiation sterilization modality for decades and accounts for more than 30% of all single-use medical device sterilization globally. The Cobalt-60 used in gamma sterilization is produced in nuclear power reactors. In recent years, Cobalt-60 suppliers such as Nordion have made substantial investments in new reactor capacity and production technology, while utilities have been extending the lives of reactors so that they will continue to operate for decades to come. As the supply of Cobalt-60 continues to grow, it has also been recognized that gamma, with its low production and operating carbon footprint, will provide a sustainable method of sterilization for the long term. This presentation will provide details on both the global supply chain for Cobalt-60 and the sustainability of gamma as a sterilization modality.”

Earlier this year, Nuclear Engineering International published the iia’s article ‘Global Healthcare and Nuclear Power’ that aims to summarise and provide an update on the work that is being undertaken to maintain and grow cobalt-60 production and the opportunities that exists to develop this further.
