SERP Meeting Recording: Advancing Sterile Insect Technique using Cobalt-60

Science and Engineering of Radiation Processing (SERP) meeting recordings are typically restricted to group members. However, due to the importance and timely nature of this presentation, this recording has been made publicly available.

In this SERP meeting, Richard Wiens (Nordion) presented Advancing Sterile Insect Technique using Cobalt-60:

Although New World Screw Worm was previously eradicated in Mexico through the application of Sterile Insect Technique, the pest has re-emerged and is threatening the Mexican cattle industry and beef exports, which has a significant economic impact. SENASICA, the Mexican Service for the National Health for Food Safety and Food Quality has been working with Nordion, supported by both the Mexican and Canadian governments, to modernize an SIT facility for a renewed fight against this pest. Presentation slides can be viewed here.

About SERP

The Science & Engineering of Radiation Processing (SERP) is a community hosted by the International Irradiation Association (iia).

This group brings together students, researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to exchange ideas, explore new developments, and strengthen connections between science and business in radiation processing.

We connect through online meetings that are designed to be idea-driven, engaging, and interactive. Each session features brief presentations – one from academia, showcasing early-stage or in-progress research, and one from industry, highlighting real-world challenges and needs. These presentations are followed by moderated discussions and interactive elements that encourage dialogue and the exchange of perspectives.

Our goal is to build a dynamic community that bridges science and industry in radiation processing through conversation, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas.

This is a networking opportunity – not just of people, but of ideas.
