iia participates in latest Irradiation Panel meeting
The iia was present at the latest Irradiation Panel meeting, held 26 & 27 November 2024, which was attended by 50 people from a board range of countries and organisations. The meeting included presentations, discussions and working sessions.
- Day 1. The Microbiology WG session was chaired by Nicola Bench and included updates on the following initiatives: SDA positives – top surviving organisms, Microbiology aspects of ISO 11137, Rapid Micro Methods, D10 database, Dose Audit Implementation Strategy for X-ray and Dosimetry v Parametric Release. The Irradiation WG, chaired by Florent Kuntz, included discussion on Release by Irradiation Parameters (RBIP), Sustainability and Mathematical Modelling.
- Day 2. The Education and Training WG reported on the agreed framework and engaged with participants who contributed to defining the knowledge requirements for three subject areas. It was noted that the initial implementation timetable (March 2025) reported to IMRP 2024 was ambitious. The WG would benefit from having access to more volunteers. Considerable work is required to implement an effective training program.
During the formal part of the meeting Adam Whaites (Chairman) highlighted that he and the Treasurer would come to the end of their period in office at the next AGM (April 2025) and that Steve Sugden (General Manager) was planning to retire at the end of Q1 2025. The Irradiation Panel forward will therefore need to refresh the current management team. Updates were provided on IMRP 2024, the work of the International Irradiation Association (iia) and the Society for Sterility Assurance Professionals (SfSAP). There was discussion about the Irradiation Panel poster at IMRP and an update on the recent ASTM meeting for committee E61. The meeting ended with a discussion about low energy Eb and surface treatments.
The next full Irradiation Panel meeting will be held in April 2025.
