COP 26 – Glasgow

In order to highlight the contribution of non-energy solutions of the nuclear industry to the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDG’s) of the United Nations, Rosatom organised aside event on the margins of COP26 on Monday 8 November 2021. Moderator of the session was Polina Lion, Chief Sustainability Officer, Rosatom.

Speakers included Boris Arseev, Deputy Director of Global Business (Rosatom) who introduced the topic, Paul Wynne, Chairman and DG of the International Irradiation Association (iia) and Giovanni Gorgoni, CEO, Regional Healthcare and Social Affairs Agency of Puglia, Italy. The speeches highlighted the diversity of industrial irradiation and the use of isotopic material in nuclear medicine.

Major applications of industrial irradiation include the sterilisation of single use medical disposable products, almost 50% of global sterilisation by volume, and the processing of polymeric material. A growing array of environmental applications could be used to assist in addressing a broad range of environmental challenges.
