Cobalt-60 now being produced at OPG Darlington

The Unit 1 reactor at OPG Darlington is now producing Cobalt-60 following its recent refurbishment and the authorisation issued by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in June 2024.

The reactor was modified during refurbishment to enable it to produce Cobalt-60. OPG will similarly modify the three other Darlington reactors over the course of the refurbishment project.

The announcement from OPG and further details of the Darlington refurbishment project are available at this link to the OPG website →

Further information about Cobalt-60 production is also available in the iia article ‘Global Healthcare and Nuclear Power’ published in the May 2024 edition of Nuclear Engineering International.
