Aerial explores the future of electron beam sterilization

Aerial, a member of the iia, has published a new paper titled Harnessing Electron Beam Capabilities: Aerial’s View for the Future of Radiation Sterilization.

Authored by Florent Kuntz and Alain Strasser, the document outlines how electron beam technology, already widely used in industrial processing, could play a much larger role in medical device and single use system sterilization. The paper examines current challenges such as dose uniformity and process definition, and presents practical strategies including optimized product orientation, beam energy selection, scattering plates, and advanced Monte Carlo simulation.

Looking further ahead, Aerial discusses the potential of electronic dosimetry and release based on irradiator parameters as pathways to faster, more sustainable, and more flexible irradiation processes. The publication highlights the need for collaboration across industry, standards bodies, and regulators to fully realize the potential of electron beam technology in sterilization applications.
