Transport Facilitation Working Group webinars
The Transport Facilitation Working Group (TFWG), of which iia is a member, ran the webinars ‘Appointing a National Focal Point on Denials of Shipment of Radioactive Material’ on 22 & 23 July 2021. The webinars were aimed at IAEA Member States to raise awareness and to encourage and assist in the process of appointing a National Focal Point (NFP) that would address and resolve issues of denial of shipments of radioactive material.
The webinars were opened by Serge Gorlin, Co-Chair of TFWG, who summarised the decline in NFP numbers and highlighted that the IAEA has again recognised the need to take more concerted action. The IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, called for more Member States to appoint NFPs explaining that this would result in the smoother transport of radioactive materials around the globe. This was followed by Bernard Monot (Navy Blue Consulting) and Natanael Bruno (Brazilian Nuclear Energy Commission), both of whom have acted as NFPs, explaining the issues behind denials of shipment and the main tasks of NFPs.
