Second ICARST – IAEA, Vienna

The IAEA’s Second International Conference on the Application of Radiation Science and Technology (ICARST) was held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from 22 to 26 August. The IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi opened the Conference attended in person by about 400 participants from around the world and more remotely. Many participants commented on the pleasure of taking part in a “real” meeting with colleagues from around the world again.

“We are trying to make science an instrument for real change,” the Director General said. He added “We foster and celebrate pure science, but we also are very focused on applications”.

Throughout the week scientific and technological advancements were discussed. A very broad range of topics were addressed, from radiation chemistry and environmental applications to accelerators, use of radiotracers, accelerators, gender equality and training. There was also a small exhibition for product and service suppliers.

The conference concluded with a round table discussion on how to shape the future development of radiation science and technology.
