Order to Reform the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission
President Trump has signed an Executive Order directing the reform of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in order to reduce US dependence on foreign technologies, decrease regulatory barriers, and support the US nuclear industry.
The Order refers to: facilitating the expansion of American nuclear energy capacity from approximately 100 GW in 2024 to 400 GW by 2050; increased deployment of new nuclear reactor technologies; establishing a pathway to approve reactor designs, and lowering regulatory and cost barriers to entry;
Whilst focused on nuclear energy capacity, the order has mandated that the NRC’s “licensing and regulation of the civilian use of radioactive materials …. be conducted in a manner that is efficient and does not unnecessarily limit …. the civilian use of radioactive materials …. or …. the benefits of civilian use of radioactive materials …. to society.”
The Order can be read in full here, or alternatively The Order is summarised in this Factsheet.
