Fermilab Medical Device Sterilization Workshop 2025 – Key Takeaways

On September 10-11 2025, Arthur Dumba, General Manager of the iia and Director and General Manager of the Society for Sterility Assurance Professionals (SfSAP), attended the Medical Device Sterilization Workshop 2025 – Optimizing Radiation Sterilization at Fermilab in Batavia, IL.

The two-day event brought together experts from the medical device, regulatory, and accelerator communities to discuss accelerator-based alternatives such as X-ray and E-beam. It was a valuable opportunity to advance the science, exchange perspectives, and explore collaboration.

Key takeaways

1. Strengthening connections between science and industry
A central theme was the importance of building stronger relationships between academia, research, and industry. The iia’s Science & Engineering of Radiation Processing (SERP) group brings together students, researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to share ideas, explore new developments, and bridge the gap between scientific innovation and business applications in radiation processing.

2. Talent development for the future
Another key takeaway was the need to develop talent within the radiation sterilisation industry. The SfSAP Learning Frameworks offer a foundation for education and training, providing practical tools that can be used to meet industry needs. This event was an opportunity for Colleges, Universities, and Education Delivery Organizations to see how the SfSAP’s resources can be used to build training and educational programs for the industry.
