Both a workshop and a research laboratory, ARC-Nucléart is an organization of public interest of which the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the Ministry of Culture, and the city of Grenoble are a part. Founded in the 1970s and located on the site of the Grenoble Nuclear Research Centre City, ARC-Nucléart has been dedicated from the onset to the preservation of historical heritage (mummy of Ramses II, 18th century wooden floor of a museum in Grenoble) and conservation of waterlogged archaeological artefacts (lake Paladru in Charavines near Grenoble). The permanent team of about 20 people has a wide range of skills in physics, chemistry, mechanics, biology, and entomology.

The missions of Arc-Nucléart now include conservation and restoration of cultural heritage artefacts made of organic and porous materials (wood, leather, fibers), research on material degradation and development of new treatment methodologies that could lead to large scale applications.

ARC-Nucléart uses a 2,000 TBq cobalt-60 pool irradiator for biocidal treatment of cultural heritage artefacts and to consolidate objects with radiation curable resins. The irradiator is also made available for research and development programs in other fields such as biology, agriculture and microelectronics.

What are we made of? How did the universe begin? What secrets do the smallest, most elemental particles of matter hold, and how can they help us understand the intricacies of space and time?

Since 1967, Fermilab has worked to answer these and other fundamental questions and enhance our understanding of everything we see around us. As the United States’ premier particle physics laboratory, we do science that matters. We work on the world’s most advanced particle accelerators and dig down to the smallest building blocks of matter. We also probe the farthest reaches of the universe, seeking out the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

Fermilab’s 1,750 employees include scientists and engineers from all around the world. Fermilab collaborates with more than 50 countries on physics experiments based in the United States and elsewhere.

Fermilab’s 6,800-acre site is located in Batavia, Illinois, and is managed by the Fermi Research Alliance LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. FRA is a partnership of the University of Chicago and Universities Research Association Inc., a consortium of 89 research universities.

The mission of IARC, which is part of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, is to advance technologies developed by Fermilab towards commercialization and, with industry partners, help create products and services that improve the health, wealth and security of the nation.

Located on the Fermilab campus, the IARC building houses offices, technical and educational space to study cutting-edge accelerator technologies. In addition to attracting new private industry partners that will create new high-tech jobs, the center also collaborates with local universities and serves as a training facility for a new generation of scientists, engineers and technical staff in accelerator technology.

The IPF is a publicly funded research institute. As a Leibniz Institute, it receives its basic funding equally from the federal and state governments. The institute operates as a registered non-profit organization. The IPF’s holistic materials research encompasses synthesis, characterization, theory and simulation of polymers and their interactions, as well as their processing into materials for high-tech applications. The control of interfacial properties and processes is of particular importance in this context. Together with partners, especially in Dresden and at the Leibniz Association, the institute thus addresses key questions in the fields of resources, health and information.

In the field of irradiation technology, the research group "Electron-induced material modification" is active in the first stages along the process from the material through the material to the final product. The focus is on holistic, application-oriented research and development of new functional polymer materials based on petrochemical and renewable raw materials. Starting from commercially available raw materials, an application-oriented modification and functionalization of bulk and/or surfaces with the help of sustainable electron beam technology should lead to the targeted adjustment of properties. In this regard, the "electron-induced material modification" research group is developing material-process-structure relationships in order to meet the complex requirements of industrial applications.

MedAccred is an industry managed, consensus-driven approach to ensuring critical manufacturing process quality throughout the medical device supply chain.
In today’s world of global manufacturing, the supply chain is multi-tiered and geographically remote, making oversight challenging and costly. To prevent output deficiencies, critical processes and products must be validated during manufacturing to prove that they are fit for purpose, satisfy regulatory requirements and reduce overall risk. The benefits include:
• Provides consistent/standardized critical process accreditation accepted by the Medical Device Industry resulting in fewer redundant onsite audits by multiple OEMs
• Conducts in-depth critical process audits that are compliant and consistent to accepted industry/technical standards and conducted by Subject Matter Experts
• Provides greater visibility of the supply chain to all levels and sub-tiers that provide critical processes, consistent with regulatory requirements (e.g. FDA, ISO 13485, MDD, etc.)
• Improves flow down of OEM requirements to sub-tier suppliers
• Medical device industry-accepted and consistent technical requirements leading to process discipline, greater operational efficiency and continuous improvement resulting in higher quality and lower overall cost

The Ruđer Bošković Institute is regarded as Croatia’s leading scientific institute in the natural and biomedical sciences as well as marine and environmental research, owing to its size, scientific productivity, international reputation in research, and the quality of its scientific personnel and research facilities.

The Institute is the leading and internationally most competitive Croatian institute by virtue of its participation in international research projects and other international scientific foundations.

Today, the Ruđer Bošković Institute has over 550 scientists and researchers in more than 80 laboratories pursuing research in theoretical and experimental physics, physics and materials chemistry, electronics, physical chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry, molecular biology and medicine, the sea and the environment, informational and computer sciences, laser and nuclear research and development.

The Radiation Chemistry and Dosimetry Laboratory (RCDL) at the Ruđer Bošković Institute has remained until the present day the only unit in the country pursuing both basic and applied scientific research in the fields of radiation chemistry, dosimetry and radiation processing.

The investigations of the nature and fate of the reactive short-lived species formed in the radiolysis are studied. The research was carried out in both simple liquid and solid systems, including polymers. Early fate of the electron and free radical reactions were studied in liquids, while radiation-induced polymerization and graft copolimerization were studied in polymers. Gamma-irradiation and time-resolved technique (laser flash photolysis) are essential for the fulfilment of the research mission.

Radiation technique became a necessary tool in many areas of scientific research especially in radiation synthesis and modifications of advanced materials and nanotechnology.

The group of the RCDL researchers works on research and development of dosimetry systems suitable for wide ranging applications over many orders of magnitude, from environmental dosimetry and radiation protection to radiation processing practices. Integral parts of this research are characterization of dosimetry systems and radiation fields, dosimetry of various electromagnetic and particle radiations (neutrons and charged particles) and evaluation of dosimetry techniques. The high-dose liquid chemical dosimetry system developed at the RCDL, based on the ethanol-chlorobenzene, has been accepted as a joint ISO/ASTM 51538 standard.

An important part of the RCDL mission remains the research of potential applications of irradiation for sterilization, pasteurization, disinfection and decontamination of medical, pharmaceutical, food and other products, and finally for protection and conservation of cultural heritage objects.
