New gamma irradiator in Indonesia
On November 15, 2017, Jusuf Kalia, Vice-President of Indonesia, inaugurated the new gamma irradiator Merah Putih (meaning ‘white and red’ in Indonesian). Located on the premises of the Research Center for Science and Technology (PUSPIPTEK) in Serpong near Jakarta, the mutipurpose irradiator was built by the National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) in cooperation with the major construction company PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk. The facility has a capacity of 2 million curies of cobalt-60. It will be operated by BATAN who plans to develop the food irradiation market, in particular for fisheries products.
