New EB facility in the Philippines
On December 8, 2014 Science Secretary Mario G. Montejo inaugurated the new electron beam facility of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) in Manila. The 2.5 MeV – 100 kW machine partly financed by IAEA will be used for R&D and semi-commercial irradiation of polymers.
The PNRI also operates a gamma irradiation facility where spices and cosmetic products are treated on a semi-commercial scale. The feasibility of a full scale gamma irradiator is being studied. The Japanese manufacturer Terumo also has an in-house electron accelerator for the sterilization of medical devices.
