Irradiation of Cannabis

Cannabis is used under strict control for medicinal purposes in a few European and American countries. Herbal cannabis products must comply with various quality standards including presence of insects or microbial contamination by yeasts, moulds and pathogens. As some of the patients using cannabis have weak immune systems, irradiation is used as a microbiological safety tool.

A scientific article published in 2016 in Frontiers in Pharmacology showed that irradiation at doses of 10 kGy does not affect the most important components of cannabis. Leading producers of medicinal cannabis such as Prairie Plant Systems and Aphria in Canada and Bedrocan in the Netherlands are using the process and posted information about it on their websites (click on hyperlink). The Dutch company Sensi Seeds has opened a debate on irradiation of cannabis on their forum.
