iia member SQHL (China) and the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) have announced plans for a Workshop: The Security of Gamma Irradiation Facilities Used for Industrial and Research Irradiation and Sterilisation. The Workshop is being held in Xian China between the 19th and 21 April 2016. iia have been asked to participate in the Workshop.

The security of gamma irradiation facilities is very topical and understanding current best practice and future possible changes is important to all those who have in interest in the design, construction and/or operation of such facilities.

If you are living or working in Asia this is an ideal opportunity to ensure that you are aware of current developments in our industry.

PBNC – Nuclear: Powering the Development of the Pacific Basin and the World

The 20th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference?PBNC 2016, was held in China National Convention Center, Beijing, China from April 5 to April 9, 2016, at the same time and venue as the China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition (Nuclear Industry China, NIC14).

PBNC is a biennial global academic and industrial forum organized by the Pacific Nuclear Council (PNC) and hosted by nuclear societies and associations of countries and regions around the Pacific Rim, under the auspices of the Pacific Nuclear Council (PNC).

PBNC 2016 in Beijing brought together outstanding nuclear scientists and technical experts, senior industry executives, senior government officials and international energy organization leaders from all across the Pacific Rim and Europe. It is committed to promoting communication and cooperation in nuclear science and technology, discussing challenges facing nuclear technology, highlighting future developments and advancing peaceful use of global nuclear energy.

Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference has been held successfully for 19 times since 1976 with its initial conference held in Hawaii, and the most recent one in Vancouver, Canada. Chinese Nuclear Society has successfully held the conference in 1987 and 2002.

The locations of the Pacific Basin Conferences are: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (1976), Tokyo, Japan (1978), Acapulco, Mexico (1981), Vancouver, Canada (1983), Seoul, Republic of Korea (1985), Beijing, China (1987), San Diego, California, USA (1990), Taipei, China (1992), Sydney, Australia (1994), Kobe, Japan (1996), Banff, Canada (1998), Seoul, Republic of Korea (2000), Shenzhen, China (2002), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (2004), Sydney, Australia (2006), Aomori, Japan (2008), Cancun, Mexico (2010), Busan, Republic of Korea (2012), Vancouver, BC, Canada (2014).

Session – New Progress in Irradiation Industry and Technology

The session was Chaired vy Kenneth Hsiao (CGN Dasheng Electron Accelerator Co Ltd) and session consisted of a series of short introductory presentations followed by a debate. The agenda for the conference can be viewed via this link – Conference Agenda.  The participants bios and abstracts appear below:

The debate focused on three issues – industry dynamics, the potential growth in the use of Eb and X-ray technologies and the future for cobalt supply and gamma irradiation.

There was a general consensus that, without the influence of regulatory distortions (which should be resisted), growth in Eb and X-ray would exceed gamma but that gamma had a long-term future as the three technologies remain complementary. A view was expressed that customers remain unwilling to pay a price that would facilitate more rapid expansion of Eb/Xray and all were agreed that the price of cobalt v electricity and cobalt disposal costs could have an impact on the relative growth in the use of a technology. Jingrong Zhang expressed the view that, with increased production of Cobalt in China, he expected the price to be stable. There was a general consensus that the industry should resist ill conceived legislation such as that proposed by the 2015 Appropriations Bill and welcomed the support that the peaceful use of nuclear energy had received in the Communique issued by the recent Nuclear Security Summit.

Webinar – STERIS AST

The Webinar is being run by STERIS AST.

Join Mara Senescu, Radiation TechTeam® Project Manager at STERIS Applied Sterilization Technologies, to understand the challenges faced in ensuring the correct dose is delivered to frozen products packaged with dry ice, ice packs or just frozen liquids.  The free, one-hour webinar will include the presentations of materials, as well as a question and answer session.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Interaction between gamma rays and high density products such as dry ice
  • Suggestions on packaging configurations that will help optimize the dose distribution through these products
23 & 24March2016

Organized in cooperation with the USDA and the Joint programme of the FAO/IAEA, the objective of the forum is to increase understanding and use of irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment to enhance global trade and prevent invasive pests.

Over the past six years Chapman University has partnered with US produce industries and USDA APHIS PPQ to conduct quality studies on a variety of fresh fruit. This project is funded by a USDA FAS Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Grant and is designed specifically to assist in developing global markets.
