Irradiation Applications

Irradiation has been used since the 1960’s to sterilize single use medical devices and equipment as an alternative to heat or chemical sterilization processes. Irradiation technologies are very well established and used to sterilise approximately 45% of the global market for single use medical products. About 90% of the sterilisation market uses Gamma irradiation but the potential to use Electron Beam and X-Ray is increasing as the technology becomes more advanced. Growing complexity in products and the increasing use of nanotechnologies and biologics means that the industry is increasingly engaging with research institutes and universities who are undertaking ground breaking research.
Consumer Products
Cosmetics and toiletries, food packaging and laminate flooring are just a few of the many consumer products and materials that rely on irradiation to improve quality, safety and physical attributes.
Border Controls
Increasingly, radiation processing technologies, in the form of electron beam and X-ray systems are being used as part of a comprehensive border control strategy to identify not only potential terror threats but also mitigate the possible transfer of pests and other invasive species across borders.
Aviation, Defense, Automotive & Consumer Electronics
Radiation processing is widely used to improve the characteristics of wire and cable by increasing the resistance of the insulation to abrasion, solvents and heat. By maintaining the integrity of the wiring and electronic components the operability and safety of the device is greatly improved. Many other polymer based components also rely on irradiation to improve their characteristics thereby contributing to functionality and safety.
Scientific Community
The scientific community has a long and distinguished reputation in undertaking groundbreaking research in the field of nuclear science. From the work of Marie Curie to the present day laboratories, institutes and universities which continue to undertaken valuable research relating to materials, technologies and applications. Much of the work that is being undertaken is being supported by national and international governments and institutions.
Space Exploration
Non-destructive testing and enhanced product performance is widely used space exploration and science. Radiation processing facilitates assist in the development of highly specialized materials that are specifically designed and tested for the rigours of space exploration.
Food Safety and Security
Food borne illnesses caused by pathogens can result in serious illness or even death. The irradiation of meat and other foods contributes greatly to food safety by eliminating pathogens before they enter the food supply chain. Irradiation contributes to global food security by reducing the amount of waste and spoilage that could lead to crop failures and food shortages.
Environmental Applications
Toxic gases can be reduced in exhaust systems and deadly pathogens can be removed from sludge and other contaminated substances helping to better protect our environment.

Science & Research

iia helps to serve as a bridge between the scientific and research community and the commercial side of the irradiation processing industry. By making the work of scientists, institutes and research facilities more visible to the industry the Association endeavours to help connect people and organizations with common interests.


iia helps to foster relationships and build awareness across scientific and research disciplines and industry sectors. To facilitate this iia has launched a Scientific Newsletter which helps to highlight research connected with polymers, biologics and nano materials.


iia supports research by supporting scientific conferences and symposia as well as by giving awards that recognize outstanding scientific research.

What is Radiation?

Radiation is energy travelling through space. Sunshine is one of the most familiar forms of radiation. It delivers light, heat and suntans. While enjoying and depending on it, we control our exposure to it. Beyond ultraviolet radiation from the sun are higher-energy kinds of radiation which are used in medicine and which we all get in low doses from space, from the air, and from the earth, mountains and rocks. Collectively we can refer to these kinds of radiation as ionizing radiation.
